Article-"What is a kegal anyway?"
Many of us have heard the term "Kegal" and may have even attempted them before. A "Kegal" refers to the contraction and relaxation of the pelvic floor muscle group. The pelvic floor is a group of several muscles that cover the bottom of the pelvic cavity. They have a role in supporting our organs, such as the bladder, uterus, and colon. They assist with starting and stopping the flow of urine or the passage of gas/stool. They also aid in sexual appreciation and act as a stabilizer muscle for our core. Doing regular pelvic floor exercises can help with urinary and fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse as well as aiding in sexual function. Now that you know what it is, here's how you find the muscle. The next time you try to urinate, see if you can stop your urine flow midstream. If you can, then your muscles are probably pretty strong. Do not start and stop your urine as an exercise, only to help find the pelvic floor muscle group. You can also find the muscle by feeling it with your finger or watching it contract in a mirror when lying down. Make sure your abdominals, buttock and thigh muscles are all relaxed
when training the pelvic floor. If you are still unsure how to find this muscle or you think you may benefit from further training come see our pelvic physical therapist, Erica Adams at our Supreme Sports Club location in Columbia!
