What is a concussion?

A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that can be caused by a direct force to the head, or an indirect force resulting in a quick forward and backward head movement.

Concussion Treatment at Chesapeake Physical and Aquatic Therapy:

We recognize that no two concussions are the same. The number and severity of symptoms vary for each person. During the first visit, a thorough assessment of your individual symptoms and limitations will be completed. A treatment program will then be designed based off of those findings. A comprehensive treatment plan focuses on symptom management as well as aiding in return to activities of daily living, work, and sport activity.

What are the symptoms of a concussion?

  • Difficulty concentrating
    Difficulty multi-tasking
    Trouble with memory
    Slower in thinking, acting, reading, and speaking
    More emotional
    Headache and or neck pain
    Nausea, vomiting
    Loss of balance
    Dizziness and or lightheadedness
    Change in sleep patterns

Physical Therapy Interventions:

  • Manual therapy
    Neck stabilization exercises
    Balance exercises
    Neuromuscular re-education
    Habituation exercises
    Provide patient education and a home exercise program
    Canalith repositioning procedure
    Gaze stabilization exercises
    Hand-eye coordination
    Return to sport protocols
