Physical Therapy Columbia - Trigger Point Dry Needling

Since 1989, trigger point dry needling (TDN), also known as Intramuscular Manual Therapy (IMT), has been a valuable tool for physical therapists in the state of Maryland for the treatment of nerve and muscle pain.  During TDN treatment, an acupuncture needle is used to release the tight bands of muscle known as trigger points. Trigger points are often very tender to touch and can even radiate pain to other areas of the body. The goal of TDN is to get a twitch response, which helps to "turn off" the tight band of muscle and promote localized healing.

TDN is NOT acupuncture! While acupuncture seeks to bring balance to the body through meridian lines, TDN specifically treats trigger points within the muscle.  Also, acupuncture requires training in traditional Chinese medicine, while TDN requires extensive knowledge of the nervous and muscular systems of the body, as well as specific knowledge of various orthopedic conditions of the body.

Most people just hear the word "needle" and immediately get nervous! Well, don't!! The needles are very thin and are usually not even felt upon entry.  Afterwards, the vast majority of people feel mild soreness that lasts only 1-2 days following treatment. The results greatly outweigh the benefits!
TDN can be used to treat any number of orthopedic or neuromuscular conditions, from back pain and headaches, to numbness, tingling and Fibromyalgia, TDN can help you!  A change in symptoms can be felt as early as the same day, but may take up to 3 days. Read this testimonial from one of our patients:

"The results that I got after Dionne administered dry needling on me were amazing.  Although the process can be a little uncomfortable, it was so worth it!  After even the first treatment, I noticed a big difference in my muscular pain.  I believe that the needling helped me to heal much faster!"

And the best part?? As part of your physical therapy treatment, TDN is covered by your health insurance! Chesapeake Physical and Aquatic Therapy is proud to accept all major insurances, so you can get started on your path to recovery!
